Dir. Giacomo Abbruzzese - 2023 - 92m - France/Italy/Belgium/Poland - In Ibo, French, English & Polish with English subtitles

Winner of the Berlinale’s Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution earlier this year starring a great Franz Rogowski (PASSAGES; TRANSIT) as a Belarusian immigrant haunted by his actions as a mercenary in the French Foreign Legion.

Following a difficult journey across Europe, Aleksei reaches Paris—undocumented—and enlists in the French Foreign Legion, which will grant him a French passport in exchange for his service. In the Niger Delta, Jomo fights against oil companies that threaten the survival of his village. Meanwhile, his sister Udoka dreams of escaping, knowing that all is already lost there. Beyond these borders, life and death, their destinies will intertwine.

“Through this scenario, debut-feature director Giacomo Abbruzzese investigates contemporary globalist Europe—the intertwined consequences of capitalism, militarism, and immigration—while also creating an interior portrait of the emotional fallout from violence and guilt. Abbruzzese’s ambitious film is a jarring, visually rich tale of exploitation and the possibility of transcendence.” – New Directors/New Films

"It’s an incredible filmmaking debut, and an unpredictable one as well, in which Franz Rogowski continues to prove he’s one of this generation’s most intriguing actors." -  Randy Myers, San Jose Mercury News

With a few psychedelic twists and turns, and some mysticism, it really gets to you in the end -- and the score is extraordinary." - Tim Cogshell, FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles)
