After a chance encounter, Kira (Alida Valli), a defiant college student, and Leo (Rossano Brazzi), a fugitive hiding from authorities, struggle to forge a life together. But it is the turbulent period that followed the Russian Revolution and they dream of escaping the oppressive state-run society. When a Soviet secret police agent also falls in love with Kira, the lives of all three intertwine and spiral toward disaster. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Ayn Rand.
