Dir. Claudia Katayanagi - 2024 - 45m plus post screening discussion

Twenty years ago, feelings of misunderstanding and resentment boiled over in a Santa Fe City Council meeting when a decision was made to dedicate a memorial to the internment camp that had existed a mile-and-a-half from the downtown Plaza during WWII.  In the award-winning documentary film, “Community in Conflict,” Bay Area director Claudia Katayanagi addresses the fraught history of attempts by some to memorialize the Department of Justice camp that imprisoned 4,555 men of Japanese ancestry during WWII and the opposition of others who felt it would be “a slap in the face” of WWII veterans.  The film presents for the first time both sides of an issue that brought back painful memories of the Bataan Death March as well as the injustices of Japanese American internment.

Nikki Louis, a Guild regular, Nob Hill resident, and co-producer of “Community in Conflict,” will introduce the director and artist/activists of New Mexico’s Japanese American community.  A short slide presentation of photographs from the National Archives, Ansel Adams, and Dorthea Lang will open the program, followed by a screening of the 45-minute film.  A lively Q&A between the Guild audience and Claudia, et al. is anticipated.
